Chelsea lost 2-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates stadium today and manager Maurizio Sarri was ferrous with his players for the defeat. There is a stubbornness to what he is doing and it’s not helping the team in any way. Admitted Chelsea strikers are struggling and Morata seems to be on his way out of the club, but if Sarri really wants to play without a striker, why can’t he play Pedro as the false 9 instead, Willian or Hudson-Odoi on the right and Hazard on the left.
From previous matches and tonight’s game, it’s clear Hazard doesn’t move particularly well as the furthest player forward but Pedro in that position will help stretch the back line of opponents with his constant movement in behind defenses. In as much as the coach has to take part of the blame, I think the players must take full responsibility for their poor showing tonight. Sarri slated his players after the match for lack of mentality, fighting spirit and most importantly, he indicated that this group of players are just difficult to motivate.
One may argue that more than half of this team won two premier league titles which could never have been possible without strong mental fortitude, but it’s also true that same group of players finished 10th and 5th in two seasons in between the two title winning seasons. Maurizio Sarri is correct in his assessment of the players and he is not the first manager to experience it but he is probably the first to point it out in black and white. It’s about time Chelsea fans and supporters realized that the players are the problem here, not systems, not tactics but mentality and attitude is what is lacking in this current squad of players.
